QB Tommy DeVito Comfortable in Year 2
With a full season under his belt, Tommy DeVito is feeling more comfortable in his role as starting quarterback of the Illinois Fighting Illini. The redshirt junior has a better understanding of the offense and is more confident in his abilities.
Increased Understanding
“I think I have a much better grasp of the offense now,” DeVito said. “I know where I need to go with the ball and I’m more confident in my decision-making.”
DeVito’s increased understanding of the offense is evident in his play. He is completing a higher percentage of his passes and is making better decisions with the football.
Improved Mechanics
In addition to his increased understanding of the offense, DeVito has also improved his mechanics. He is now releasing the ball more quickly and with better accuracy.
“I’ve been working hard on my mechanics all offseason,” DeVito said. “I think it’s really paying off.”
DeVito’s improved mechanics are helping him to be more efficient and accurate with his passes.
Leadership and Confidence
DeVito is also emerging as a leader for the Illini. He is taking ownership of the offense and is not afraid to speak up when he sees something that needs to be changed.
“Tommy is a natural leader,” said head coach Bret Bielema. “He’s got the respect of his teammates and he’s not afraid to hold them accountable.”
DeVito’s leadership and confidence are rubbing off on his teammates. The Illini are more confident and excited about the season with DeVito at the helm.
Looking Ahead
DeVito and the Illini are looking to build on their success from last season. They have a tough schedule ahead of them, but they are confident that they can compete with anyone.
“We have a lot of talent on this team,” DeVito said. “We’re excited about the season and we’re ready to take the next step.”
