NFL Playoffs: These Teams Have Clinched Or Been Eliminated From Contention So Far

As the 2023 NFL regular season races towards its conclusion, several teams have either secured their playoff berths or been eliminated from contention. The playoffs are a single-elimination tournament featuring the NFL’s top teams, so each win and loss carries significant importance.

The following teams have clinched a spot in the 2023 playoffs:

Team Division Record
Kansas City Chiefs AFC West 13-3
Philadelphia Eagles NFC East 13-3
Buffalo Bills AFC East 12-3
Cincinnati Bengals AFC North 11-4
San Francisco 49ers NFC West 11-4
Dallas Cowboys NFC East 11-4
New York Giants NFC East 8-7-1
Jacksonville Jaguars AFC South 8-8

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles have already secured the top seeds in their respective conferences, giving them a first-round bye in the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are currently battling for the No. 1 seed in the AFC, while the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are in a tight race for the NFC’s top spot.

The following teams have been eliminated from playoff contention this season:

Team Division Record
Houston Texans AFC South 2-13-1
Denver Broncos AFC West 5-11
Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFC South 6-9
Seattle Seahawks NFC West 7-9
Washington Commanders NFC East 7-9-1
Detroit Lions NFC North 8-8
Los Angeles Chargers AFC West 9-7

The Houston Texans were the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention after their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. The Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Seattle Seahawks were all eliminated in Week 16, while the Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Chargers were eliminated in Week 17.

The remaining teams in the NFL are still in contention for a playoff berth. The Arizona Cardinals (4-12), Atlanta Falcons (5-11), Carolina Panthers (6-10), Chicago Bears (3-13), Cleveland Browns (7-9), Indianapolis Colts (4-12-1), Las Vegas Raiders (6-10), Los Angeles Rams (5-11), Minnesota Vikings (12-4), New England Patriots (8-8), New Orleans Saints (7-9), New York Jets (7-9), Pittsburgh Steelers (7-9), Tennessee Titans (7-9), and Green Bay Packers (8-8) are all alive in the playoff race.

The Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and Green Bay Packers are currently in the running for the NFC’s final two wild-card spots. The New York Giants are currently in the running for the NFC East crown. The Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers are all mathematically alive in the playoffs, but their chances are very slim.

The 2023 NFL playoffs are set to begin on January 14, 2024. The full playoff schedule and matchups will be determined once the regular season concludes on January 8, 2024. The playoffs will culminate in Super Bowl LVIII on February 12, 2024, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
