In his first Red River Rivalry start, redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers impressed with his poise and efficiency. Ewers completed 19 of 32 passes for 289 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. His scoring strikes included two to wide receiver Xavier Worthy and one each to tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders and running back Bijan Robinson.
Despite Oklahoma’s high-powered offense, the Texas defense stood firm for much of the game. Linebackers DeMarvion Overshown and Jaylan Ford combined for 20 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Longhorns also forced three interceptions, including a crucial one by cornerback Ryan Watts in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
After trailing 10-7 at halftime, Texas erupted for 27 points in the second half. Worthy’s 75-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive of the third quarter set the tone for the comeback. Robinson added two rushing touchdowns in the final period to seal the victory.
Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a disappointing performance, throwing for just 221 yards with two interceptions. The Sooners’ rushing attack was held in check, with Eric Gray gaining only 56 yards on 13 carries.
“This is an incredible moment for our team,” said Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. “Quinn Ewers was outstanding, and our defense played with tremendous heart.”
“We made too many mistakes today,” said Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables. “We need to learn from this and come back stronger.”
Texas’ victory improves their record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns face West Virginia next weekend before a challenging road matchup against the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Oklahoma falls to 3-2 and 0-2 in the Big 12. They will look to rebound when they host No. 13 Kansas next Saturday.
