“When I was younger, I would jump at any role that came my way,” said Murray. “But now, I have to think about how it will affect my kids. I want to make sure that I’m not taking on anything that they’re not comfortable with.”
Murray, who is married to actress Sarah Roemer and has two children, acknowledges that his newfound fatherhood has influenced his career path.
“I’ve passed on some roles that I thought were great because I didn’t think they were appropriate for my kids to see,” he said. “I want them to be proud of the work I do.”
Casting director Sarah Finn notes that Murray’s decision is not uncommon among actors who become parents.
“It’s a natural instinct for parents to want to protect their children,” said Finn. “They want to make sure that they’re not exposing them to anything that could harm them.”
Murray’s choice to prioritize his children has led to a shift in the types of roles he accepts. In recent years, he has starred in more family-friendly productions, such as the Netflix series “Virgin River.”
“I’m still drawn to challenging roles,” said Murray. “But now, I’m more selective. I want to make sure that the projects I’m working on are something that my kids can be proud of and that I can be proud of as a father.”
As Murray’s children grow older, he anticipates that his role selection process will continue to evolve.
“My kids are at an age where they’re starting to understand what I do for a living,” he said. “I want them to be involved in the decision-making process as they get older. I want them to know that I value their opinions and that I’m always striving to make choices that will make them happy.”
