Norfolk, VA – Old Dominion University’s (ODU) valiant rally fell short as East Carolina University (ECU) held on for a nail-biting 20-17 victory in Saturday’s highly anticipated football matchup at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Despite trailing 20-10 with less than four minutes remaining, ODU quarterback Hayden Wolff orchestrated a dramatic drive, culminating in a 44-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alfred Benkert. However, ECU’s defense held firm, denying ODU’s ensuing two-point conversion attempt.
“We battled back, but it just wasn’t enough,” said ODU head coach Ricky Rahne. “ECU made some big plays when they needed them.”
ECU quarterback Holton Ahlers finished with 161 passing yards and a touchdown, while running back Keaton Mitchell rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown. ODU’s Wolff threw for 192 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice.
The rivalry between ODU and ECU, known as the “Battle for the Bell,” has intensified in recent years. The two schools have met seven times since ODU joined FBS in 2013, with ECU holding a narrow 4-3 edge.
“It’s always a tough game against ECU,” said ODU linebacker Jordan Young. “They’re a well-coached team with talented players. We’ll have to learn from our mistakes and get ready for next week.”
The loss drops ODU’s record to 1-3 on the season, while ECU improves to 2-2. Both teams will face off again in Greenville, NC, next November.
