The game lived up to its billing, with both teams exchanging blows throughout the contest. Quarterback Trenton Bourguet led Arizona State’s offense, completing 23 of 36 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Daniyel Ngata added 109 yards on the ground, helping the Sun Devils control the tempo of the game.
BYU’s offense, led by quarterback Jaren Hall, struggled to find consistency. Hall threw for 237 yards but was intercepted twice, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Arizona State’s Timarcus Davis.
The Cougars defense also had a tough night, surrendering 427 total yards to the Sun Devils.
“It was a tough loss, but we have to give credit to Arizona State,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. “They played a great game and took advantage of our mistakes.”
Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards was elated with his team’s performance. “This is a huge win for our program,” said Edwards. “We knew BYU was a tough opponent, but our players stepped up and played with heart and determination.”
The win marks Arizona State’s first over a ranked opponent since 2019. It also gives the Sun Devils a leg up in the Pac-12 South Division race.
BYU, meanwhile, will seek redemption next week when they host Wyoming (4-1). Arizona State will travel to Stanford (1-4) in hopes of continuing their undefeated start.
