Montana controlled the game from the outset, forcing a three-and-out on Missouri State’s opening possession. The Grizzlies offense responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Lucas Johnson 1-yard touchdown run. Montana forced another Missouri State punt on its next drive and quickly extended its lead to 14-0 when Dalton Sneed connected with Malik Flowers for a 32-yard scoring strike.
The Bears showed some fight in the second quarter, scoring 10 points on a field goal and a 53-yard touchdown pass from Jason Shelley to Naveon Mitchell. However, the Grizzlies held a comfortable 17-10 advantage at halftime.
The Grizzlies defense tightened up in the second half, forcing Missouri State into three quick three-and-outs. Montana’s offense took advantage, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions of the third quarter. Johnson ran for his second touchdown of the game, and Sneed found Samuel Akem for a 19-yard score.
Lucas Johnson was named player of the game for Montana, rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Dalton Sneed also had a solid performance, completing 17 of 29 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’m really proud of our guys for the way they played today,” said Montana head coach Bobby Hauck. “We started a little slow, but we made some adjustments at halftime and played much better in the second half. It’s a great way to start the season.”
Montana will host the South Dakota Coyotes next Saturday, September 10, at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
