Memphis Football: Karmelo Overton Out Of Hospital After Spinal Injury
Memphis Tigers wide receiver Karmelo Overton has been released from the hospital after suffering a spinal injury during last Saturday’s game against Navy.
Injury Update
Overton was injured in the second quarter of the game when he collided with a Navy defender. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital.
According to a statement from the Memphis athletic department, Overton underwent surgery on Sunday to stabilize his spine. The surgery was successful, and Overton is now recovering at home.
Statements from Memphis
Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield said in a statement that he was “relieved” that Overton was out of the hospital.
“Karmelo is a tough kid, and we know he’s going to fight through this,” Silverfield said. “We’re all behind him and we’re going to do everything we can to support him.”
Support for Overton
Overton has received an outpouring of support from the Memphis community and beyond. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover his medical expenses, and it has already raised over $100,000.
Overton’s teammates and coaches have also been visiting him in the hospital. Quarterback Seth Henigan said that Overton is “in good spirits” and that he is “going to be back on the field soon.”
Outlook
It is still too early to say when Overton will be able to return to football. However, he is expected to make a full recovery.
In the meantime, the Memphis Tigers will continue to support Overton and his family. The team will wear helmet decals with Overton’s initials during their next game.
